I really am starting out slowly on recorder this year with third graders. T=
he students have had them about a month and I haven't even given them their=
books (Recorder Resource I with some Recorder Karate) yet. We're only doin=
g recorder about 10-15 minutes of our 40 minute period.

I am requiring that they can play BBB AAA GGG with good tone quality and wi=
th "toohing". I mark B or BA or BAG in the gradebook when they get it. And =
now I'm requiring that they be able to read BAG. We just had our first Mr. =
E lesson last week and practiced reading the first 4 measures of "Jolly Old=
St. Nicholas" from the chalkboard. Not sure if or how I'll test that they =
can read notes. I have BAG papers from Recorder Resource I run off and read=
y to give...or they could read Poison Rhythm Powerpoint pages... Meanwhile =
we sing "Hot Cross Buns" and rote copy parts of the song...

When I have students who just need an extra push I tell them to come in
at recess. Sometimes one on one time away from the rest of the class
really helps. =20
