A lot of people use the word smartboard inappropriately. So maybe this will
help (or not - LOL).

The generic tool is called an interactive white board. IWB.

The Smart company got first big recognition with its IWB and now many people
just call all iwb's smartboards ---- like Kleenex is used for any type of
facial tissue.........

The Promethean company out of the UK also has an IWB. The company is been
very keen to establish its niche in the education world.
Its boards are called Activboards. (ABs and SBs for abbreviating purposes is
useful.)

Smart files are called "notebooks"; Promethean files are called
"flipcharts." I have had mostly positive experiences with importing
notebooks into the AB software. Somethings don't translate well; a lot do.

The software for Activboards comes in two mostly interchangeable types,
ActivStudio (AS) and ActivPrimary (AP). They both function the same but
there are slightly more features (and ones that I really like to use) in
ActivStudio.

There are two main "skins" for their software - Activstudio is the main one
that is used by professionals and educators in middle school and up.
Activprimary is the second one that is more geared toward elementary users
(primary in English school terms).
They are basically interchangeable in usage for me. Activiprimary has a nice
"skin" that I like with my elementary kids and it seems less fussy to use
with them, as well. I like to create my flipcharts with AS because of the
features.

Promethean has recently been working on a new software offering called
"Inspire." Tami (earlier posting) is very much the tech whiz and has been
using the beta version and sending in feedback to the company so she really
knows whereof she speaks. If you read her posting again with this new
background knowledge, you may be less confused.

PrometheanPlanet.com is t.h.e. place to go to explore the ActivWorld.
