It's great for them to set a long term goal that
is obtainable and not so easy it doesn't really
mean much once obtained anyway. That's
why I made mine harder. I want it to "be" a
real honor to achieve the belts, like something
huge has been accomplished. 100% of them
are continuing with it as they get to choose to be
in that program or not. The regular music
class is not recorders but general music using
all the instruments so more diversity in class.

One of the students is motivated by the idea
if he reaches black belt he will get to "teach"
others in the upper grades when they do learn
recorder basics in class. He can be a team captain
and work with a small group if we have a challenging
song to work out.
