At my school, we have a transitional room for mild to moderately =
challenged
students, and this is the approach I use. Sometimes they DO want to do =
what
the other kids do (I have a Downs student who comes to mind), and we =
just
knock the tempo down. BA songs, and adding C (which I haven't done =
before,
but will now!) are great. Sometimes, even if the holes aren't covered, =
if
they're getting there, I give them a belt. For some of my kids, just
attempting to form a B is an accomplishment.
Using corn cushions to help those students with tactile problems (or =
Wiki
sticks) also helps (as well as using a Velcro dot to cover the B hole).
Recorder Karate also has a great model for using iconic music. I've also =
had
peers or paras point notes out to students.
With these kids, for me, rhythm is secondary. I want to be sure they get
"work" on their motor skills and eye-hand coordination.
My district purchased Smartmusic for all music teachers before the last
school year. Although the kids didn't get subscriptions, I found it was =
a
godsend in slowly down accompaniment tracks. Rip the CD into Smartmusic =
and
use that to help increase speed. The kids felt SO much better! Those =
kids
who struggled did NOT want to do the song without the CD, but got =
frustrated
at the tempo. Smartmusic gave us the best of both worlds. I'm sure there =
are
other programs out there that would do the same thing. (Probably =
Audacity?)
Consult with the OT person, also, for ideas on modification. If the =
child
has a para, they might be willing to work with that child. (The paras =
for my
kids are godsends.)

I haven't done recorder karate yet. This was my first year. I used =
some of
the songs from recorder karate, but didn't test. But if I were going to
test, I think it would be good to have different tests for those who =
can't
do recorder karate because they are special ed. Maybe rhythms all on =
one
note? Maybe test for length they can hold the note, or playing four =
notes
without squeaking? Maybe have them echo a rhythm that you play first, =
if
they can't read rhythms. You have to find something that will challenge
them, but be possible for them to attain. I think that you should give =
them
a belt each time they pass, but if you don't feel that you can give them =
the
same reward, maybe you have to have them earn stickers on a chart toward
some other kind of reward. Or maybe have four stickers equals a belt.
Brain storm some ideas with your special ed teacher. It is great to =
help
with their self esteem. Music is something that they can be successful =
at,
especially if other areas are difficult for them.
